Fiesta Makes a Splash: The Annual Witte Museum Fiesta Exhibition
The Witte Museum is one of the only locations in San Antonio to learn about Fiesta’s history from its origins in 1891 with the Battle of Flowers Parade to today’s Fiesta San Antonio Commission events, and the Witte is also the home for the Fiesta San Antonio Commission’s poster collection from the past decade.
Look to the water and find a flow of inspiration. Whether it’s the rush of rivers, the rhythm of ocean waves or life-giving rains, this essential element connects cultures, sustains life and sparks creativity. Fiesta® is no exception. Fiesta planners and designers have often drawn on the symbolism and allure of water to bring the celebration to life. Imagery of flowing streams, mighty seas and sparkling fountains runs deep through Fiesta’s rich history.
Since 1909, the Order of the Alamo has crowned a queen to reign over Fiesta. The tradition includes elaborate coronation robes, bejeweled gowns and dramatic trains worn by the queen, princess, 24 duchesses and their entourage, plus the Lord High Chamberlain. Each year, these garments reflect the court’s new theme. Over the past 117 years, many coronation robes have depicted water’s timeless beauty and vitality. This exhibition celebrates our enduring connection to water, showcasing the stunning artistry and craftsmanship woven into each graceful train and shimmering gown.
The Witte’s annual exhibition of Fiesta gowns, accompanied by informative interpretative signage, sparks the imaginations of visitors of all ages and from all backgrounds. Founded in 1926, the Witte Museum is where Nature, Science and Culture Meet, through the lens of Texas Deep Time, and the themes of Land, Water and Sky. Located on the banks of the San Antonio River in Brackenridge Park, the Witte Museum is San Antonio’s premier museum promoting lifelong learning through innovative exhibitions, programs and collections in natural history, science and South Texas heritage.
