Having attended the Battle of Flowers® Parade, the oldest parade of Fiesta®, David captured a colorful scene at the end of it. There was a brilliant display of confetti scattered all over the ground. This was the muse that sparked the idea for his winning poster.

He took it a step further and envisioned an animated folklórico dancer whipping her vivid dress around as it falls into pieces of confetti. This confetti spills over the iconic sites of Fiesta® and San Antonio’s skyline showing the unification of all people in San Antonio as they come together.

The word, “VIVA” is emblazoned over the top of the scene illustrating the favorite word on the lips of every participant.

The appearance of the hummingbird represents the light and positive belief that reigns over fiesta.

Brightly-colored mariachis, always a Fiesta® music favorite, are seen trumpeting the sounds which inspire the movements of the dancer.

The red heart, seen on her earrings and on the silhouette of the Alamo, illustrates the passion of Fiesta® and the love for our community and culture.

The blue & white Talavera tiles framing the poster portray San Antonio’s rich heritage seen in our missions and in our homes.

“Fiesta®” is a concept that never leaves graphic designer, David Durbin’s, thoughts. His love of Fiesta® paired with working as an award- winning artist at Monarch Trophy Studio, enabled him to share this passion with the world. Not only was David one of its pioneers having designed medals, going back as far as 1999, he also had numerous medals winning in the “Best Of” category starting with his first personal design in 2011. This medal further propelled his art to another level.

Simultaneously, Rey Feo asked him to design medals for every Court member. David custom-made these medals with each one having a different appeal resonating with their vision. This was the birth of a monumental Fiesta® medal industry that we now see on every Fiesta®- goer attending the ten-day event.

David’s medals tell a story, and each one is a small billboard of each person’s idea of what Fiesta® signifies to them. In 2017, David created the holy grail of medals with his image of a hummingbird. This time the bird depicts good fortune and spirituality while bringing light to all they encounter. This medal was another acclaimed creation that echoes the city’s great love of Fiesta®. Medals, coupled with other genres like Rey Feo’s crest that appears on his cape, iconic scenes displayed on NIOSA® stackable cups and countless sashes are the impetus that brought David to this point of designing the coveted Fiesta® Poster.

The bringing together of all of these mediums is what makes David Durbin a Fiesta® Artist, Extraordinaire. His vision to gather these images depicting Fiesta® San Antonio generate great appeal for the love of our city and our traditions. iVIVA!
